July 16 - July 20
Tuesday - Day ThreeAfter two days inside, we decide that it's time to get out so we make plans to do some shopping. We had ordered the digital camera yesterday and we were waiting for it to be delivered before we went out. We called FedEx and checked their web page and they said that our package had been put on the delivery van in South Boston at 8:18 this morning and that it would be here sometime before 3 pm. Derek said that FedEx usually delivers to him around twelve so we waited and waited and sure enough it did not arrive until after two-thirty so we did not leave here until three o'clock. It looks a little overcast but we don't expect that it will rain. We decide that the first stop will be a camera shop to pick up a tripod and as we get close it starts to rain. No, it starts to pour. There is lightning and thunder and we have not seen rain like this for a very long time. There is even more rain than we saw recently in New York - the downpour reminds us of the most magnificent Nassau rain, but for one thing. Not only is it raining but is starts to hail as well - something that never happens at home! - and we get to the camera store and just sit in the car waiting for it to let up. Trish, like a good Bahamian, counts the time between thunderclaps and lightning (she counts up to six between them, which means the thunder is quite far - five or six miles - away). Finally the rain lets up and Philip and Derek dash out through the falling drops to the door. They spend a good while in the store, as the sales people there move at the speed of a slow turtle. The tripod collected and the rain stopped, we head on over to the food store for something for dinner and we contact David on the cell phone about a time to pick him up. The food store in question is a fresh food market run by a Lebanese man in the Armenian part of town; the food is wonderful and exotic (look, Nico uses that word too!) and the owner, Jack, is very welcoming, offering Philip and Nico home-made baklava. That done, we move on to a computer store but find nothing there that interest us so we go to collect David.
Our next stop takes us to an audio store because Nico is in need of a small tape recorder for her research - she once had her hands on a professional one (property of Cambridge University) but she gave it back and has missed it ever since. We spend some time talking to the salesman and we make our purchase and try to leave but the rain has started again and we are trapped at the door of the store. Trish had stayed in the car and we find out later that she was occupying herself playing a game on her cell phone. We could have called her to come and get us but Derek's cell phone had been left in the car. We run from building to building trying to miss the rain and we get into a Radio Shack where we stay until the rain stops and then we go back to the car and head home. Once home, we hang around. Derek and Trish plan dinner - a mix of leftover Cornish hens, coconut basmati rice and barbacued chicken pieces together with fresh foccacia bread, olives and a magnificent salad. Nico disappears upstairs to have a shower and a brief workout - 20 minutes on the treadmill (a very tempting investment, but as there is a gym around the corner from our house in Nassau it might not be the best one). Philip works for a while on the computer, and then puts the new tripod together (no more jerky movement when filming shows!) and plays with the new camera and recorder. During dinner, Derek and Trish get a pleasant surprise. Their neighbours, Greg and Christina, who have gone away for their anniversary, are on their way back. There is more than enough food for them - so they are invited over to share the dinner. They arrive with horror stories about the resort that they had been staying at, and promise that they cut their stay short out of necessity - because it was awful and far too expensive. So they share the dinner, and Derek has also invited a cinematographer friend of his to come over as well. David has to go out again, to a party, and Trish offers to take him, and Nico goes with them. They drop him off at the party and then go and pick up ice cream to finish off the meal, and then, Greg and Christina having eaten dessert and returned next door, and Brian the cinematographer settled demonstrating his way cool equipment, we all chill quietly. |
