July 16 - July 20
Wednesday - Day FourWe woke up as usual in steps. Trish as always was the first person up in the house; today I (Nico) was the second. I went and got the clothes I left out to dry in the fresh breeze yesterday (and which got rained/hailed on), which I had returned to the wash last night, and hung them up, hoping that today at least there wouldn't be a thunderstorm. Philip rose while I was downstairs and took up residence at Derek's computer, preparing to watch Steve Jobs' keynote address from the MacWorld Expo in New York. Trish started to make a mammoth breakfast. In the middle of it Greg and Christina from next door phoned to invite us for pancakes. They were too late, and so they joined us for eggs and bacon instead. It turns into another lazy day. It is grey and damp, threatening rain that doesn't deliver, reminding me of Nassau in winter. David is itching to go out shopping, and though I would love to do so as well, I feel an urge to get some work done in preparation for my new job. So Derek, Trish and David go out, leaving Philip and me behind. I begin to read Robert Wilder's Wind from the Carolinas, one of the books I must teach this fall; I review the thesis briefly, trying to figure out where the holes are in preparation for my defense (scheduled, I learned last week, for September 21). We download photos from the digital camera, watch MacWorld, drool over the new releases from Apple, and chill. Here are some of the fruits of our labour:
Tonight, Derek and Trish have planned to hold a celebration in honour of their neighbours Greg & Christina's wedding anniversary. They return from shopping laden - David with his new purchases, and Trish and Derek with ingredients for tonight's dinner. Derek makes baked snapper with ginger and herbs, and Trish makes a soba noodle dish to go alongside, a magnificent salad, and a very special dessert - warm ginger cake with lemon curd and whipped cream. Greg & Christina arrive, and Derek opens three bottles of wine to taste and to drink with dinner, and we sit down. We spend the evening marvelling over the food, discussing the merits of each bottle of wine, and teaching Greg & Christina certain Bahamian phrases. All in all it is a very nice night. David and I go nuts taking photographs with the digital cameras. Below are snapshots of the evening:
