Denver

June 27 - June 30

Thursday - Day Three

We went out early today to get breakfast, look around Mall-land, and possibly see a movie. We drove first to one of the malls on the strip, looking for somewhere to eat, and discovered a place whose name fascinated us: Le Peep. (It also had this section called Le Cafe, which seemed like it was more appropriate than Le Peep). Anyway, we went in, and took a peep (haha) at the menu. It was a breakfast/brunch/lunch place, mostly serving eggs or chicken in some form or another. Because it was a cafe, it also had coffee (duh). We enjoyed the food we had there - crepes (Nico) and turkey (all right, not strictly a chicken) in a pita (Philip). After that, we decided to walk across the main road to the mall on the other side, as the movie we decided to see (MI-2) didn't start till 3:00, and we finished our brunch by 1:00. The other mall housed a Barnes & Noble bookstore as well as an audio/video store (Sound Trax), and so we walked around each one, browsing. We checked out the HDTVs that Sound Trax had on display, and looked at the digital cameras. Then we wandered around B&N. There, Nico bought a book giving tips about Civilization II.

MI-2 was fun. It was the first movie that Nico had seen directed by John Woo, and we were both highly impressed. Great action sequences - artistically shot, and alone worth the money you pay to see the movie on the big screen. Also Tom Cruise ages like wine - he gets better and better looking, and fitter and fitter, so he was extremely easy to watch. The story was a little Bond-like, but MI-2 was definitely better than the latest James Bond offering. Anyone looking for a little summer distraction, this is a good movie to see.
Stephen has decided that we have to experience dinner at Denver's premiere sushi restaurant, a place where he took Michael, his nephew, on Michael's recent visit to the area. So he phones them up, reserves a room, and schedules dinner for 8 p.m. So off we go. From the outside, the restaurant doesn't look like much - it is in (yet another) mall, and the interior decor is pretty normal. However we are directed to a room in the back, that is set off from the rest of the place by paper walls, and where we take off our shoes and sit on the floor, Japanese style.

Savouring sushi in Denver

Stephen, who was a fairly regular customer, took over the responsibility for ordering the sushi and the sake. So we ate such delicacies as the barely cooked tuna appetizer, which was served with onions, hot sauce, and lime (not unlike Bahamian scorch conch), spider roll, which was crab and vegetables, Chicago roll (which had a number of different sea creatures wrapped in rice), rainbow roll (many different kinds of raw fish in seaweed), and the old reliables, spicy tuna & California rolls.
We ate more than enough, and we followed it up with dessert - tempura bananas and ice cream. We returned to the house, a drive of about 40 minutes, well fed and very warm from the smooth, strong sake. And we rested for our final day in the Denver area.
